Objective
This project investigates the impacts of using heat exchangers connected to municipal water systems for thermal energy exchange, focusing on potential changes in water quality during operation. In partnership with the Cambridge Water Department, we will design and construct a small-scale, bench-top heat exchanger system coupled with a compact heat pump to simulate real-world conditions. The setup will circulate treated tap water through the exchanger, mimicking a closed-loop system representative of municipal configurations. Water samples will be analyzed before and after the heat exchanger to assess any alterations in physical, chemical, and biological properties. This work will provide empirical data to inform future large-scale geothermal or wastewater heat recovery integrations within municipal water infrastructure.
